Systematic, nomenclatural and distributional problems of Aphodiinae, primarily in the Italian fauna, are considered. Four new genera are described: Nobiellus n. gen., Bodiloides n. gen., Planolinellus n. gen., Planolinoides n. gen. and three genera, Parabodilus Hollande & Thérond, 1999, Rhodaphodius Ádám, 1994 and Bodilopsis Ádám 1994, are restored as valid genera. Relative systematic positions are discussed, and new combinations for pertinent species are proposed. Several colour variations are described. Aphodius (Liothorax) wilsonae Maté & Angus, 2005 is considered n. syn. of Liothorax niger (Illiger, 1798).
